Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS will debut on the
Nexus 5 and also be available for the Nexus 4, 7 and 10 as an
over-the-air (OTA) update. Due to Google’s policy of not supporting
devices that are more than 18 months old, the older model Galaxy Nexus
was excluded from the Android 4.4 update eligible device list.
As reported
by Phandroid Sunday (Nov. 3), now there’s a way to get Android 4.4
KitKat running on the two year old Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Experienced
Android developer baldwinguy77, created a custom Android 4.4 “Shiny”ROM
for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. The build is based off Android source code
from Google via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and features
stock Android 4.4, build KRT16M. Slight changes were made to allow the
ROM to work on the Galaxy Nexus, so the update is OTA-like and not
rooted.
For Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners who wish to root
the phone, baldwinguy77 said it can be rooted easily by installing
SuperSU 1.65, the latest superuser control app from Chainfire.
Everything in the ROM was tested and confirmed working, but as with all
new software updates, there are possible bugs. Since there are frequent
changes to the AOSP source, the Android 4.4 custom “Shiny” ROM will be
updated weekly with updated binaries and bug fixes.
If you’re a Verizon Galaxy Nexus owner and would like to
download and install the Android 4.4 custom “Shiny” ROM 4.4 KitKat OS,
