Nokia Lumia 1520 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3: Which 6-inch smartphone is best?

Nokia_Lumia_1520_01-300x300The Nokia Lumia 1520 is a big, bold new Windows Phone 8 smartphone with a stunning 6-inch 1080p display. Its most direct competitor in this respect is the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, so we thought we’d take a look at the two ‘phablet’ titans and see how they compare.
When it comes to choosing a new smartphone, an increasing number of people want an abundance of everything. They want as much screen space as possible, plenty of power on tap and a top of the range camera – and they want it all to come in a sleek package.
With the Nokia Lumia 1520, all of those needs (or should that be wants?) will be met. Nokia doesn’t exist in isolation, though, and rival Samsung has produced its own creditable maximalist device, the Galaxy Note 3. Let’s take a look at how they compare in three key areas.

Nokia Lumia 1520 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3: Design

How does a phone look? How well is it built? What does it feel like in the hand? All are matters related to a handset’s design. On all three points, the Nokia Lumia 1520 comes out on top.
It sports the now legendary Lumia unibody polycarbonate design, moulded from one tough-but-finely-sculpted lump of material. It’s simultaneously brash and sophisticated, and it’ll survive its fair share of knocks and scrapes to boot.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 also sticks to its manufacturer’s trademark design language – but unfortunately that is widely perceived to be a little cheap and plasticy. This is smartphone design-by-numbers. It’s safe, solid and lightweight – but far from imaginative or desirable.

Nokia Lumia 1520 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3: Camera

The Nokia Lumia 1520 features a formidable 20-megapixel camera with PureView technology and a Carl Zeiss lens. The PureView technology means that, like the Nokia Lumia 925 before it, it’ll be brilliant at capturing low-light shots.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3, for its part, comes with a 13-megapixel camera. By all accounts it’s a decent effort, with fast capture and decent levels of sharpness. But it lacks the pure specs, quality components and unique features of the Lumia 1520 equivalent.

Nokia Lumia 1520 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3: Screen

The Nokia Lumia 1520′s display is ever so slightly bigger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3′s, but at 6-inches and 5.7-inches respectively, there really isn’t a great deal in it.
Both are 1080p examples too, which means that they’re packed full of pixels. Both screens are based on OLED technology, which leads to superior blacks and more vibrant blacks than older LCD displays.
So, an even outcome then? Not quite. As we noted in this article, Nokia used Nokia World 2013 to run a live side-by-side comparison of the two handsets and how they handled various lighting conditions – indoors, bright sunlight and so on. Suffice to say, the Nokia “killed it.”
Check it out for yourself:
So there you have it. The Nokia Lumia 1520 is the superior 6-inch smartphone in all three categories. We’d also argue that its pure Windows Phone 8 OS is more advanced and more pleasant to use than the heavily modified version of Android that the Galaxy Note 3 runs on, but that’s a matter for another time.
